Custom Newborn Portrait Session: The Importance of Listening

Capturing the beauty of a newborn is a deeply personal experience, and that’s why every custom newborn portrait session I offer is designed to reflect the unique wishes of each family. Listening to my clients is essential in creating images that not only capture their baby’s precious features but also evoke powerful emotions and memories for years to come. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a mother who brought personal items to her baby’s session, items that she hoped would bring those memories flooding back when she looked at the photos in the future.

Her hands are gently tucked under her cheek, and her dark hair is slightly tousled. During this custom newborn portrait session, the mother wanted to include items from home. She hoped these items would remind her of how small and perfect her baby daughter was. As we styled the session, she envisioned pulling out these portraits in the future. She wanted memories of her baby’s appearance, sweet sounds, and the soft scent of her skin. She also wanted to remember how perfectly her daughter fit in her arms. This emotional connection is the heart of every session I create. My goal is to preserve fleeting moments that stir up love and nostalgia.

The top left shows the baby's soft hair, the top right captures her tiny hands resting under her chin, the bottom left focuses on her tiny fingers gripping a blanket, and the bottom right features her ear and fine hair. My studio is stocked with beautiful props. However, I always ask parents for personal items to include. It could be a beloved blanket, a family heirloom, or something reflecting their culture. These details add layers of meaning to the images. This approach makes each session unique. It also ensures the portraits are keepsakes with sentimental value for the family.  When planning a newborn portrait session, parents often wonder how to make their baby’s photos extra special. Every session is unique and personalized, capturing those first precious days in creative ways. The parents' hands, wearing wedding rings, cradle their baby's tiny hands, creating a tender moment of connection. The soft textures and delicate skin of the baby are captured beautifully, highlighting the love and bond within the family. The images from that session now serve as timeless reminders for the mother. They aren’t just pictures of a newborn. They are a powerful link to the intimate, joyful moments of her baby’s early days. This is the goal of every custom newborn portrait session I design. Specifically, I aim to create photographs that do more than freeze a moment in time. Furthermore, these images transport parents back to the feelings, sounds, and warmth of holding their baby for the first time.

When you book a custom newborn portrait session, you’re investing in more than just beautiful images. You’re creating a visual story that captures the emotional depth of welcoming a newborn into the world. By listening to my clients and personalizing each session, I’m able to create photographs that will bring joy, love, and sweet memories for Today. Everlasting.

Meet Carol

I have been taking pictures since I was old enough to use a camera   . . . back then it was a little 110 mm! One of my favorite parts of becoming a mother was having two little girls who loved being in front of the camera as much as I loved hiding behind it.   Read More
